... My Name is Jimmy Stapp. A born and raised Georgia native, I managed to receive a pair of degrees from the University of Georgia - a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Masters of Teaching and Education in Technology Education. I have done a bit of travelling and resided in Brooklyn, NY for the final years of the 20th century before returning to the South and - eventually - becoming a teacher.
I'm a gear-head and tinkerer who has always been a bit obsessed by the way things work. I'm fascinated when all the small parts of any given assembly come together to equate something greater than their arithmetic sum. I believe that (when applied effectively) technology can improve our lives and make the world a better place. At our best moments in history humankind utilizes technology to advance our civilization through massive engineering feats, and we use it to create the most beautiful works of art we can imagine.
In my free time I enjoy building and improving as many of the things in my life as possible. I have a thing for sustainability, I despise waste and I especially enjoy modernizing and maintaining vintage machinery and keeping it useful for as long as i possibly can. I appreciate modern technology just as much and I am a proponent of the Maker philosophy/movement. I've spent a great deal of time with my 3D printer this past year and I've begun to delve into the new, affordable micro-controllers flooding the American market from overseas and all of the windows of possibility they have flung open.
I currently teach Engineering and Design for Atlanta Public Schools at South Atlanta School of Computer Animation and Design. I sponsor both a coding/programming club as well as our local chapter of the Technology Students Association. We are a title one school and %100 of my students participate in the free/reduced lunch program. Whenever possible I try to incorporate my "outside" interests into my career as I feel like it is my duty to provide my students with as many opportunities as possible - whether that be the opportunity of a job with a friend's business or as simple as exposure to something that spurs their imagination. One day I'd like to successfully blur all of the lines separating my career from the "leisure" activities and have them all work together in a synergistic manner. This web-presence is a part of that dream. Please peruse this site and come back from time to time. I am constantly updating and adding content.
